Meet the Makers: James Mendez Hodes

Lucian Khan No Logo.png

This summer we’re taking time away from playing our games to meet the people who make our games and lead our communities.

Who is James Mendez Hodes? He’s the kind of person where, if you’re in a hallway of game designers and community leaders, he’s the one they say you should talk to right now and record the entire conversation.

Mendez (he/him) is a game designer, martial artist, cultural consultant, professional game master, writer, editor, and poet whom you might know from role-playing games such as 7th Sea, Scion, and Thousand Arrows; or from essays like “Orcs, Britons, and the Martial Race Myth” and “May I play a character from another race?” He has an academic background in West African religion, Eastern classics, dance, and English literature. His interests include hip hop, weird invertebrates, and collecting stuffed animals. He lives in the greater New York metropolitan area on traditional Lenape land.

He runs games, he writes games, he writes about running games.

Welcome to Night Vale - A Monsterhearts Drama - Episode 4

"My clothes are all tattered and I've got scratches all over me and I have a forearm tattoo in a language that none of you recognize"

Before we begin dear listener, remember everything you hear is real. Also everything we say is a lie. In a very special adventure, Our Terrible Warriors have become citizens of that quiet desert community known as Night Vale. Using our own custom module of the Monsterhearts RPG, Steve, Julian, Orie, Dee and Tom led by our Narrator Justin, we dare to learn who we really are and prepare our story as we look into the void. Welcome to Night Vale.

In our fourth and very final episode, which is the end of our adventure, we join our now longer strangers as they try to piece together recent events and save Night Vale from being snatched away to wherever it's going to. Will they learn what's really going on or will a timely weather report wrap everything up in time for the credits? Probably that last one.
